Human chorionic gonadotropin

What the literature describes
hCG shares an alpha subunit with LH, FSH and TSH, with a distinct beta subunit and a long C-terminal peptide that gives it a substantially longer circulating half-life than LH. It binds the LH/hCG receptor on Leydig cells with high affinity. In published human work a single 1500 IU injection raised plasma testosterone for at least 96–120 hours with peak values at about 72 hours, and repeat injections within 48 hours of a first dose produced no additional Leydig-cell stimulation. Standardised hCG stimulation testing remains a clinical tool for assessing Leydig cell reserve.
