What the literature describes
Alpha-MSH is an ancient anti-inflammatory peptide found in barrier organs such as gut and skin. Published dissection studies have traced the bulk of its anti-inflammatory activity to the C-terminal tripeptide KPV. The reported mechanism is distinct from that of the core MSH sequence: KPV appears unlikely to signal through melanocortin receptors and is instead described as acting via inhibition of IL-1β function and NF-κB nuclear translocation. In murine dextran-sulfate colitis, alpha-MSH administration reduced faecal blood and weight loss relative to placebo, and colonic lesions were reduced in both acute and chronic rat colitis models.
